Hop On Hop Off Bus Tour

What better way to see York than to take a tour in an open top bus?

Founded by the Romans, York soon became England's Second City and has witnessed wars, peace agreements and prosperity throughout its 2,000 years of existence. King George VI reflected on the City's central role throughout the years when he commented: "The history of York is the history of England." Visit the magnificent York Minster with its priceless display of stained glass; walk in Medieval streets or on the 800 year old Bar Walls; visit award-winning museums; or, sample our excellent restaurants and shopping.

Your ticket is valid for 24 hours, so that you can use the tour buses to travel from one attraction to another, or back to your hotel, the Railway Station, or your coach or car park.

Tour Highlights

~ Cliffords Tower - This great tower, perched high on a Norman motte, remains a solemn reminder of York's troubled past. In 1068, William the Conqueror constructed a large mound (motte) on the banks of the River Ouse and built a wooden castle at the top.
~ The Lendal Bridge - A Victorian construction across the River Ouse, Lendal Bridge links the city with the railway station and its northern districts. The parapet of the bridge features the ornate designs of the white rose of York, the crossed keys of the Diocese of York, and the lions of England
~ The Monk Bar - Monk Bar consists of a four-storey gatehouse. It is the most elaborate and ornate of the surviving gates. The passageway and two lower storeys have elaborate vaulted roofs. The Bar dates from the early fourteenth century. The elaborate design of the gatehouse meant that it could function as a self-contained fortress with each floor capable of being defended.

LIVE GUIDED TOURS - Buses leaving Exhibition Square at 00 and 30 minutes past each hour will usually carry a live guide.

MULTILINGUAL TOURS AND KIDS COMMENTARY - Buses leaving Exhibition Square at 15 and 45 minutes past each hour will usually offer commentary in up to nine languages including English and a special commentary (in English) for children.

RECORDED COMMENTARY IN ENGLISH - Other buses have a comprehensive pre-recorded commentary in English.

WHEELCHAIR AND BUGGY FRIENDLY BUSES - Our low floor, easy access buses normally run at least every 30 minutes.
